Google Glass Update:
I’ve been wondering for a while when Google may do a little more with their Glass than just taking photos and sharing them. Well the Google Glass update that has just been pushed does just that. The Google Plus app for Glass has just received a major overhaul. In this most recent Google Glass update, Push notifications are now enabled for direct shares, comments and mentions. I’m not the biggest Google Plus user but I will say that I’m sure there will be lots of you out there that are very pleased with the Google Glass update.
Also new in the update are restrictions on background uploading. Now they may only take place when the device is not only plugged in, but also hooked up to a Wifi Network. I understand why plugging in is necessary. The serious battery life issues Glass has suffered are well documented, and background uploads certainly don’t help with that. Most of the time if you’re plugged in its likely you will probably have WiFi. The only reason I can think up as to why they wouldn’t allow upload over bluetooth tethering is that perhaps they’re trying to address certain privacy issues as we covered in This Article
There were several smaller changes in the update. Incoming Hangouts will now get notifications and Transcription will now be apparently, “wicked fast” In addition a few UI options were added, along with international number dialing and SMS. IF your interested in the ins and outs of this Google Glass update, the full change log will be added at the end of the article.
Google’s Nexus products are famous not only for their rapid updates but also the lengthy amount of updates and support they get from Google. I’m personally glad to see its not exclusive to the Nexus line and Google are taking the same route with their newest gadget. Lets be honest here, nobody wants to pay $1,500 for something the manufacturer may very well not support so this newest Google Glass update might ease your mind a little more right now if you are a Glass owner.
Many early reviews chastised Glass for its limited use potential. Right now there simply isn’t a whole lot that can be done with it. Luckily, we are seeing more features added at a steady rate. This is the first really useful Google Glass update providing functionality that could and may well promote Glass to the masses.
I can also see a lot more wearable technology to become available fairly soon. Do you believe that Google glass will actually be useful when it’s released to the public?
